Comprehensive Sexuality Education Course Insights

As part of our professional development supported by Project Mukti, we (two of the education facilitators) attended a six-month course on Comprehensive Sexuality Education offered by TARSHI (Talking About Reproductive and Sexual Health Issues). TARSHI works extensively in sexual and reproductive health, and well-being through information dissemination, knowledge and perspective building, within a human rights framework. The course significantly enhanced our understanding of sexuality, gender, body image, and the influence of technology on young minds. We would like to share some of what we learned and the perspectives that we developed during this course.

Comprehensive sexuality education has completely transformed our perspectives on gender and sexuality. As facilitators, we have developed greater empathy in our interactions with others. It has also given us the knowledge and tools to challenge harmful norms, promote inclusivity, and advocate for the rights and well-being of all individuals.

One of the most illuminating aspects of our course was exploring the concept of gender as a broad spectrum, rather than a binary. It helped us recognize and respect different gender identities, crucial for fostering an inclusive environment. We gained insight into the deeply ingrained stereotypes around sexuality, and how they perpetuate discrimination and inequality. This understanding has enabled us to be more sensitive as facilitators.

Body shaming and its detrimental effects on self-esteem and mental health were addressed and the importance of body positivity and self-acceptance was emphasized. We learned how to promote a compassionate view of beauty and self-worth by challenging societal norms that dictate unrealistic body standards. This shift in perspective will help in making the learners understand how to build a healthy relationship with their bodies.

The in-depth discussion about reproductive health made us understand how necessary it is for young learners to have access to accurate information from trusted sources for their well-being, enabling them to make informed decisions about their bodies and lives.

With a deeper understanding and new strategies and perspectives, we had a new approach to our Summer Program - Critical Narratives on Gender and Sexuality. We were able to engage the learners in more meaningful conversations and challenge gender-based stereotypes. As a result, the learners showed remarkable openness and active participation in these discussions. Our increased clarity and confidence have played a key role in bringing about these positive changes. The implementation of learnings from the Comprehensive Sexuality Education has been transformative for both us as facilitators and learners, thus taking a step towards a more equitable society.
